Sheriff Andy Taylor & Deputy Barney Fife, 'The Andy Griffith Show'
Andy Griffith was one of the great straight men in TV history, and Don Knotts one of the medium's most outsized goofballs. Put the two together and you get magic, a perfect pairing of opposites: one relaxed and wise, the other high-strung and panicky. And each man made the other better, as actors and as characters. That Andy would trust this clown to be his sidekick in policing Mayberry spoke to Andy's generosity, but also to his belief in the general peacefulness of the town. That Andy only allowed Barney to carry a single bullet, and in his shirt pocket rather than in his revolver, spoke to his sensibility. And Griffith being such a perfect scene partner led to five different Emmy wins for Knotts.
