By the time he'd finished his most recent tour-of-duty as Oscar host, Billy Crystal seemed like a tired old man, a relic of a previous era that skewed too old for Oscar producers. When he came out on Sunday, well into a telecast where the hosts were pretty clearly bombing, he was welcomed as a savior and the audience gave him a standing ovation. Crystal didn't do anything all that funny, he mostly introduced a series of Bob Hope clips. But he made a cutting reference to the Academy thinking that young, hip actors were the secret to a good telecast. There will be many candidates to next year when the Oscars select a course-correcting host, but you can bet that the first call will go to Crystal. Other people my Twitter feed wanted hosting next year included Robert Downey Jr. and Sandra Bullock.
