Update: Beyonce, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Judd Apatow are in
A Whole New Pre-Show
Ever since ABC convinced the Academy to create their own Pre-Show in an attempt to diminish the likes of E! and TV Guide day-long red carpet coverage (which really hasn't worked), the half-hour program has always seemed like a rushed effort to get every high profile star on the red carpet in front of the camera. Unfortunately, the likes of Billy Bush, Chris Connelly, Cynthia Garrett and Vanessa Minnillo (ugh), could never make it less awkward and informative than it really is. In fact, Leeza Gibbons may have been the only host to really walk away with her dignity intact.
This year, the show is going for some big guns recruiting "Project Runway's" Tim Gunn (who actually knows something about fashion), "Good Morning America's" classy Robin Roberts (who has interviewed presidential candidates, MVP's and Oscar winners) and Entertainment Weekly's Jess Cagle. The later of those choices is the only weak spot as Cagle, hardly a television regular, isn't even the Oscar expert at his own magazine! Now, why the telegenic and seemingly perfect Dave Karger isn't there? Perhaps his contract to appear on NBC's "Today Show"? Needless to say, if that's the case, they should have made an exception.
