Background: You may scoff at "City of God," but then you wouldn't remember Fernando Meirelles's nod for best director and the film's best adapted screenplay nomination. Miramax campaigned hard for the film which did not make the best foreign language film cut. It was an industry favorite and would have had at least 5% of the first place votes.
