"The Following" (FOX, January 21)
Kevin Williamson has been plying his trade on The CW, but he makes his return to network TV with a gruesome serial killer drama that is decidedly not CW-friendly. In fact, "The Following" may be one of the more harrowing dramas you've seen on network TV. Perhaps it's that cable sensibility that lured Kevin Bacon for his first network TV role as an FBI agent on the trail of a murderer (James Purefoy) whose sadistic crimes and love of Edgar Allen Poe have attracted a... following. FOX has a lot riding on "The Following" after a dismal fall and you've probably been seeing ads on the network for months. At the very least, "The Following" has the advantage of both its star power and of hitting the screen before The CW's somewhat similar "Cult" and NBC's very similar "Hannibal." It remains to be seen if audiences are going to have the answer for TWO shows like this (CBS' "Criminal Minds" remains a steady hit), much less four.
