"Outlander" (Starz, April 4)
I'm not sure that "Outlander" was *quite* the popular smash that Starz may have hoped for given the pre-premiere buzz, but I made the mistake of suggesting this time-traveling Scottish romance might be the network's "Walking Dead." Well, it hasn't been that, but "Outlander" has still been a major perception-changer for Starz, a hit that attracted a wildly devoted fanbase, but also generated extremely positive reviews and the kind of patina of prestige that hasn't necessarily been common for the network or the bodice-ripping genre. Well, as readers of Diana Gabaldon's bestseller could certainly warn you, the first half of the "Outlander" season and the first half of the first book are somewhat slow-burners. The second half is when things get extra-kinky, extra-twisted and, depending on how they handle a few incidents from the book, extra-problematic. Personally, I'm curious/wary/intrigued to see how things will be handled going forward, but fairly confident that Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan and Tobias Menzies will maintain the swooning.
