"Fresh Off The Boat" ABC, Preview February 4, Premiere February 10)
I get that Eddie Huang is reappropriating the "fresh off the boat" slur and also using a hip-hop play-on-words with "fresh," but I still don't love the title, if only because it's going to be a barrier-of-entry for some viewers. That could be too bad, because Nahnatchka Khan's adaptation of Huang's memoir is a really funny '90s-set fish-out-of-water comedy that deserves a big and wide audience. "Fresh Off the Boat" will get a boost from the "Interview"-fueled visibility of Randall Park (paired appealingly with Constance Wu) and benefits from terrific across-the-board casting, including strong juvenile actors Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler and Ian Chen. Yes, it's the story of a Taiwanese family in Orlando, but it's very universal and, as I already said, very amusing. In a perfect world, "Fresh" would be paired with some permutation of "Goldbergs," "The Middle" or "Black-ish" next year.
