5. "Django Unchained'
In theaters: December 25, 2012
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kurt Russell, Kerry Washington, Don Johnson
Lowdown: A slave is set free by a bounty hunter and trained to help him, and the two set out on a mission to find and rescue the slave's wife from a sadistic plantation owner.
Drew McWeeny says: Quentin's take on the spaghetti western genre is an amazing read, and he's created a number of tremendous roles for a dense cast. If Jamie Foxx pulls off the role of Django, it could change the way people think of him as an actor, which is a strange thing to say about an Oscar winner. The film's take on race is, at the very least, incendiary, and this could easily be the most controversial thing Tarantino has ever touched.
