"Cold in July"

Lowdown: Director Jim Mickle is on a roll after two smart indie horror films, "Stake Land" and "We Are What We Are," the latter of which premiered in the midnight division of last year's festival. So hopes are high for his latest, which might cross over into less niche genre territory. Billed as a Southern-fried noir, It also promises "Dexter" and "Six Feet Under" star Michael C. Hall the substantial film lead he's long deserved. He plays a small-town family man who is hailed as a hero when he kills a home intruder, though finds himself in trouble when the dead man's vengeful, violent father turns up on the scene. Shades of "A History of Violence," with extra pulp? We'll see. Mickle's filmography so far has taught us to expect surprises.
