'The Look of Love'

Lowdown: Averaging at least one feature a year, British director Michael Winterbottom's work rate is such that, almost inevitably, a number of his films don't quite click – but he hardly ever makes the same one twice. His latest, however, suggests at least a notional return to the territory of one his best efforts, “24 Hour Party People.” Formerly (and preferably) titled “The King of Soho,” “The Look of Love” reunites Winterbottom with regular collaborator Steve Coogan, and is a biopic of Paul Raymond, the smutty entrepreneur who founded London's first, er, gentlemen's club in the 1950s, and in doing so, gave rise to the UK capital's still-flickering red-light district. It's tasty material – particularly intriguing to a Londoner like me – with a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (“Control”) and a choice supporting cast.
