Why: One simple reason, really: Claire Denis is my favorite working filmmaker. The 65-year-old Frenchwoman last burned a hole in our screens nearly four years ago with “White Material,” which I named my #1 film of 2009. She's an uncompromising stylist who never takes the easy way out of a story, and her latest sounds as tough as its title. A moody revenge thriller, it centers on a ship captain out to avenge his brother-in-law's death, only to fall in love with his target's mistress – I'm guessing this won't be as pulpy as it sounds in Denis's hands, though the sensual pleasures of her films are more crucial to me than narrative specifics. Somewhat surprisingly placed in Un Certain Regard rather than Competition – though she wouldn't be the first A-list filmmaker to debut something special there.
