Only God Forgives
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Stars: Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm
Premiere date: Wednesday, May 22
Why: “I pretty much want to have sex with this movie,” I tweeted immediately after “Drive” premiered two years ago at Cannes – and I wasn't the only one. Though Nicolas Winding Refn was channelling 1980s Walter Hill, and Ryan Gosling 1960s Steve McQueen, that seductively nasty fast-car thriller raised the bar for 21st-century cool – and their follow-up seems to exude the same neon-nights allure. This time it's Bangkok providing the mean streets, and Gosling is a boxing club proprietor out to avenge his brother's murder. We can no doubt expect a lot of smoldering badassery from The Goz, but he might not be the true star of the movie: rumor has it that Kristin Scott Thomas, as a mean mafia mama with a Donatella Versace dye-job, is something to behold.
