James Durbin of 'American Idol'
Hometown: Santa Cruz, CA
Currently Resides: Santa Cruz, CA
Our Overly Hasty First Impressions: "American Idol" needs to stop repeating James' emotional backstory. We know it by now. We've seen him cry a dozen times. But that isn't the worst of James' problems. He's a somewhat less theatrical (yes, that's code) Adam Lambert on a show that already experienced the real thing. James' range is comparable to Adam's, but what made Adam so popular was his ability to reinterpret songs and make each week's performance unique. Can James do that, or can he just wail? And did the judges' praise of his wailing go to his head? Best case scenario? James has a deep, Lambert-esque run. Worst case scenario? James keeps searching for ways to work The Scream into every performance and he becomes this season's Siobhan Magnus, alternating between showstoppers and disasters leading to a mid-range elimination.
