'Dazed and Confused'
For those of us who fell in love with Rick Linklater's love letter to high school life in the '70s, one of the reasons that film landed so hard was the remarkable work by McConaughey as Wooderson, that creepy older guy who just won't go away. Pretty much every single second he's onscreen in the film, he is incandescent and perfect and brilliant, and every line of dialogue out of his mouth is flawless. But if we're picking moments? It's when he walks into the pool hall, and Bob Dylan sings, "One time, he could have been the champion of the world." It's piercing, a brilliant match of song to image, and it perfectly crystallizes the amazing performance that McConaughey gave in the movie. He bought the rest of his career with this work, and it is one of the great performances of the '90s.
