Marvel at the movies: From 'Blade' to 'Spider-Man' to 'The Avengers'

As the heroes prepare to assemble, we look back on previous films

Next year's tentpole epic "The Avengers," directed by Joss Whedon ("Buffy," "Firefly") promises to be the culmination of Marvel Comics' recent foray into producing their own film properties, as characters like Iron man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Black Widow (pictured) will assemble as The Avengers under the watchful eye (har, har) of Sgt. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and SHIELD.

In this gallery, take a look at the long, strange path Marvel movies followed in order to get to this point.

Around $8 billion in receipts. Cap should pull another half bill. The Avengers at least that. Pretty impressive for some silly comic book characters, wouldn't you say? I think the success of the films proves the genius of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the creators of most of these characters.

You left out some, including the Men in Black movies, which have a combined worldwide gross of over a billion.

Larry Aplleton Those were not superhero movies. They were based on a comic book series but the publisher was Aircel, not Marvel.

They did leave out The Punisher starring Dolf Lundgren from the early 90s though.
