Call it a cheat if you have to but this would be a four-way tie for my #11. So I felt compelled to single these films out on the list this year. Each of them, at one point or another, had a real shot at landing in the 10. In the end, I recognized that they're representative of a certain verve present in independent filmmaking today that is incredibly exciting. The way Jeremy Saulnier compels with storytelling visuals in "Blue Ruin," the way Jim Mickle keeps his thriller "Cold in July" fresh and unpredictable at every turn, the way David Michôd captures the broken heart of a dystopia in "The Rover" and the way Ava DuVernay tells a specific story in the MLK canon with such an assured and majestic grace in "Selma" — this is simply an exciting cross-section of a certain generation of talent out there today. I will be first in line to see whatever they conjure next.
