Do you know how hard it is to craft something so precise that it leaves you as wholly satisfied as Damien Chazelle's sophomore effort does? As well, do you know how hard it is to do so with a level of confidence that seems to roar the very definition of the word "talent" in your face? This kid has it, and "Whiplash" is like a vicious manifesto on exceptionalism (of the American sort, even, if you so choose the reading). As a two-hander, it provides Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons with a canvas to splatter like Pollock on a bender, blood, sweat and tears at the ready on the palette.
