This is one of the most important films of the year and many people have no idea it exists. That rare thing, a female character study with serious meat on its bones, "Beyond the Lights" has a lot to say about stripping away the misogynist artifice of stardom and being your own person (and artist). But it's also a blistering jab to the chin of an industry (not just music, but entertainment in general) that obsessively services the male gaze. It's so effortlessly and gracefully accomplished it left me desperate for director Gina Prince-Bythewood to command more attention in the industry.
