From 'A(mour)' to 'Z(ero Dark Thirty)'
8. "Argo" (Ben Affleck)
Someone recently used the word "effortless" to describe Ben Affleck's third feature, and it's applicable. The old adage about a good story told well is also applicable, but really, this is just as solid as it gets and the workmanship of the thing shouldn't be held as pejorative. There's been a steady progression in Affleck's work as a filmmaker and while some might find this one flat on big ideas, I think it's entirely relevant as we figure out our relationship with Iran and, indeed, with the world: the film is finally about cooperation. And it's done in a thrilling, assured fashion.
