Amber Holcomb of 'American Idol' interview
On coming out of nowhere for her first Sudden Death performance: "I felt like I had to do something, because nobody even knew who I was. So I was like, "OK. I'm gonna just do something that'll blow everybody's mind.""
And did she know as soon as she finished that she'd done it? "I did! I felt like I did. I really did. I'd been working on that song for like months and months and months and just to finally get on-stage and having it be recorded and all that? I was like, "Yeah.""
On the danger of being The Girl Who Sings Whitney songs: "I love her, don't get me wrong. I love singing her songs. But that's not the kinda artist I necessarily want to be right now, so I'm gonna kinda... Not stray away... I'll sing her, cuz I love her, but I am gonna bring something different. Expect the unexpected."
Who are the kinds of artists she wants to be right now? "Really? Right now? There's no artist that I can compare myself to that I wanna be like. I can give you a mixture: Beyonce, Rihanna, Azealia Banks, Whitney and maybe Celine Dion. Put 'em in a pot and mix it? Amber."
What should we know about Amber that maybe we don't? "Just know that I've overcome a lot of things to be where I am today, confidence-wise. I've been through moving a lot, getting picked on and everything's just built me to be the person that I am today."
