Devin Velez of 'American Idol' interview
On what his vocally enthusiastic mom will do when Devin gets his first criticism: "You know, though she's a momager, I think she'll be alright. She's a singer as well. My mom and I, we critique me just much as they don't. It's funny cuz Mariah, when I sang "Listen" by Beyonce, she was like, "I can tell you were critiquing yourself. Don't do that." It's just a force of habit. Thought they say, "Oh, you did so well." It's just like, "No, man. I knew I could have done that better." I think it's gonna be funny seeing my mom's reaction, but I don't think it's going to get outrageous."
On what it means to critique yourself in-song: "I think it's the fact that you can see it so strongly in my face, just through my countenance. It's just like, "Man. Don't show it." It's almost like messing up a lyric. If you play it off the right way and the audience doesn't know, don't go, 'Oh!" because then that's giving it away. So I've gotta make sure that when I feel that I've done something wrong, that I critique myself when I'm off-stage, don't show the audience that I didn't give them my all."
On mixing things up between practice and performance: "It's funny because we practice twice a day and then it's the real deal and for the first two rehearsals, I usually do the same thing and for the last time, I change everything. I don't know why. It's just like I don't want it to be planned. I want it to be like, "The way I feel right now, that's how I'm gonna do it." Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not-so-good and it's just like, "Man, I should not have done that. It didn't sound that good." In the end, it's you being spontaneous, it's you being natural, it's you being pure."
On his plans to continue to sing in Spanish: "I think that though it's a strength, I don't want it to become cliched and I don't want it to become predictable, because I will get voted off because I'm predictable and that's not the goal. I'm definitely going to keep it in my back pocket. It's helped me out thus far, so we're gonna keep it just kinda in a safe spot."
