On the importance going up-tempo (Mary J. Blige) with her Victory song last Thursday: "My performance tonight and definitely on Wednesday night... I did "Natural Woman" [last week] and it was really old-fashioned. I can do the soul thing, but I also have an artistry that I want to be show. That's why I chose the past couple of songs that I've done."
On who she's like in the musical landscape: "A lot of people compare me to Mary J. Blige. They compare me to modern-day R&B. Jazmine Sullivan is somebody that I look up to and they compare me to her. I've even been compared to Queen Latifah a couple times. I'm not sure why... I guess it's just the demeanor that she has? I honestly don't know. People compare me to her and Jazmine Sullivan and Mary J. Blige and Anita Baker."
On avoiding being pigeon-holed with the "diva" songs: "The divas, with the "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin and the Whitney and the Mariah... I could do all of that, but there's an "artist" side to me that I really want to come off on TV and with "Ordinary People," I feel like I got the chance to do that."
On Curtis Finch Jr's excited response to seeing her advance. "Curtis and Burnell are my brothers. Me and Curtis got cut at the same point last year and just to know that we're here again on this carpet doing all these interviews and stuff like that... And Burnell, he reminds me of my little brother. We play around and stuff like that. I've gotten so close to them and just to see their reaction, they were the the first people that I looked at when I came out and I did some crazy dance and he ran to me and I just lost it. I couldn't take."
