This summer season has been a succubus of bad concert ticket sales, even for the old standbys. But take a look at even some middle or small venue rock tour schedules for the fall, and find yourself some gems.

In the following pages, we outline some of the better or more interesting of these, of indie rock acts that are either independently signed or -- you guess it -- rock.

What shows are you excited about? What should we have included?

On this page, we have Bright Eyes frontman / Monsters of Folk collaborator Conor Oberst, who has been making more noise lately as a co-figurehead with Zack de la Rocha in the Sound Strike.

However, he's taking a handful of dates this fall to tour the West Coast, under his name with the Felice Brothers as support and the backing band. I can say as a witness those dudes are pretty weird, but wholly entertaining. It promises to be a killer pair-up.

You might want to rethink Sufjan on this list. I saw him on that last tour of intimate shows and the stuff he was workshopping was the worst part of the show. Think industrial sounds mixed with free jazz... not good. His older material sounded glorious though.

katie, a princess I agree with you that his States project and Seven Swans is the material I like the best, but there's something to be said for the electronica project work. I think where his "intimate" shows fell apart is at material he hadn't finished and didn't have a full arrangement backing. We shall soon see!

I am SO freakin' stoked to see Arcade Fire in Vancouver in September. So far the best show I've seen this year (or any year, actually...) has been Muse but I can't wait to see and hear The Suburbs played live, what an astoundingly brilliant album.
