Best First Screenplay: "In a World"
Lake Bell's debut totally caught me by surprised on screener a few weeks ago. I missed the Sundance premiere and the subsequent summer release but it's lovely to know gems like this are always lying in wait for you to discover them. On the page, Bell's work is expert, crafting lovely, lovable characters and a story that draws you in with its charm, vulnerability and, above all, honesty. Perhaps the film can even find room in the performance races, or in the Best First Feature category for Bell herself. But at the very least, her work as a scribe deserves some love.
