Best Supporting Female: Emma Watson - "The Bling Ring"
Casting the erstwhile Hermione Granger in a bratty Good Girl Gone Bad role may seem a bit of a stunt move, but the ever-improving Watson is smart enough not to let her casting do all the work for her. Hers is a much wittier, more surprising take on teenage toxicity than it might have been, and the liveliest performance in the undervalued ensemble of Sofia Coppola’s equally undervalued film. As Nikki, a devious, publicity-craving piece of work, Watson doesn’t hold back on the character’s hilariously venal vapidity. But just as she seems headed into the realm of teen-movie caricature, Watson drops the hauteur, showing us the panicked little girl behind the cool little bitch as the titular ring is rumbled. It’s sly work from the young starlet: seems "Harry Potter" really was just the beginning for her.
