Fingers crossed these contenders aren't forgotten
Best International Feature: "Berberian Sound Studio"
Peter Strickland’s mesmerizing, none-too-sweet homage to Italy’s grisly ‘giallo’ cinema tradition was a big winner at last year’s British Independent Film Awards, taking prizes for Strickland and his never-better leading man Toby Jones, among others. It would be fitting to see this true independent honored across the pond, where it might look as out of place as Jones’ bewildered, mild-mannered sound engineer feels as he’s reluctantly assigned to a grotesque Italian B-horror and increasingly unable to extricate the film’s world from his own. It’s as complex and unusual a movie about the moviemaking process as we’ve seen in recent years. The Spirits usually nominate one British film in this category, so it would be nice to see them take a chance on this one.
