    The Punisher

Great, great list. Particularly happy to see Alberto Iglesias' name mentioned here. He's never been much of a thought in my head, but with this film, he has become my 2nd fav. working composer (next to Alexandre Desplat) and this has been my favorite nominated score from the past few years. Would also include TTSS for Adapted Screenplay.

I never understand the love of Brad Pitt. He's, at best, a serviceable actor. His work in Moneyball is grossly, insanely, maddeningly overrated.

Fliegender Adding extra, superfluous, redundant, unnecessary adjectives doesn't make your argument any better.

jcpdiesel21 I completely agree. He was good, but I don't think he was anywhere near the other nominees that I've seen in that category. And had nowhere near the intensity of Michael Shannon, who was unjustly shafted in this category.

ChampSkins Yea - Moneyball in general was easily the most overrated film of 2011... IMO

Best Supporting Actress: DEFINITELY Jessica Chastain.

All others, meh....especially Malick for Best Director

I agree that Chastain is best in that category BUT too much too soon at The Oscars is a real thing, and I think the nomination does better things for her career than a win would.

RyMickey You're probably right in that regard...something I hadn't even thought of, really. However, Chastain would still get my vote from the nominated list of five. I actually felt this was a fairly weak year for Best Supporting Actress and when I look over my list, I can barely make a Top Five that I can really support fully.

Good list but I'd add Chico and Rita in best animated film. I don't see the big appeal of Rango, its gorgeous but I never got hooked in, whereas Chico and Rita is a truly beautiful love story. Plus, it would be nice for this Oscar to go to a real, grown up animation and a year with no pixar threat is a good opportunity

I'd also personally LOVE to see Nick Nolte get the Supporting Actor

Joe I thought Plummer was fantastic but if I had to choose I'd go with Nolte. Plus anything that gets people to watch "Warrior" is a good thing.

"I will go against the grain by saying I feel he topped himself with “The Tree of Life.” This exercise in meditation was not entirely comprehensible but nor did it descend into the realm of pretentiousness. Rather, I felt like a fuller human being at the end of it. That is what filmmaking should be about"

That was beautiful - and I wholeheartedly agree!

The only minor bone I'll pick is that you have two wishes for the best actor category, and it takes a little away from the brad pitt fantasy when oldman is your number one. Minor quibble though.

Any category where 'The Artist' doesn't win will suit me fine.

Chastain was great, but no way should she or anyone else upset Spencer.

I think I need a more detailed primer on the difference between the two sound categories because Guy's plumping for Drive in Sound Editing for its use of the score and silence I thought would be more Mixing than Editing. But I feel like I hear discussion of music frequently in Editing discussions so clearly I'm misunderstanding something when I think of it just as sound effects.

Anybody at all beating The Artist for me. I know it isn't going to happen but I really though that movie was just okay.

    The Great Dane

Gary Oldman deserves an Oscar in general, yes, but his performance in Tinker Tailor is HARDLY the best leading male performance of the year. Seriously. Yes, underplayed to perfection, but really? It's great to see him finally nominated, and interesting to see him so calm when he's so great at being over the top - but no one will able convince me that his performance in Tinker Tailor deserves an Oscar.
