2. Best Director: Wes Anderson, "Moonrise Kingdom"
As someone who never really glommed on to the cinema of Wes Anderson, I was a little taken aback by how much "Moonrise Kingdom" resonated with me. And I think it's less the screenplay and acting (each of which are crucial, of course) than the deft handling of an obviously personal story behind the camera that made that impact. It's Anderson's best film since "Rushmore," deeply felt, a sign of growth as a director. --Kristopher Tapley
