Michelangelo Antonioni has been in Competition at Cannes five times, and has wound up taking home a prize (including the Palme d'Or for 1966's "Blow-Up") on four of those occasions. The odd one out, as it turns out, is perhaps his finest film: his languid, unnervingly amorphous anti-thriller of assumed identity, starring the then-untouchable Jack Nicholson, who might have stood more of a chance at the Best Actor award had he not won it two years previously. The 1975 Palme winner, Algerian war film "Chronicle of the Burning Years," was apparently a well-received pick at the time, but hasn't shown equivalent staying power.
