Why it was great: Short's new memoir is titled "I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend," and in his first "Stern" appearance the actor actually lived up to the book's title. As much fun as it can be to hear a wild, unpredictable star spout off on the show, sometimes it's nice to get an intimate look at an iconic talent who's actually...pleasant. Howard's skill as an interviewer lies partially is in his deft transitions between lighter and heavier topics, and with Short he managed to elicit entertaining, little-known career anecdotes (i.e. his disastrous attempt at standup comedy) and moving personal stories relating to both his fraught relationship with "SNL" legend Gilda Radner and the death of his wife Nancy from ovarian cancer. What emerged from the hour-and-ten-minute sit-down was an in-depth portrait of a comedian who's managed to retain a clear head in an industry brimming over with fragile egos - which didn't make it any less compelling.
