The Green Goblin, 'Spider-Man'
Why they were supposed to be scary: As Spider-Man's archenemy, the Green Goblin is clearly meant to be feared.
Why they failed to impress: Willem Dafoe was a fine choice for the big bad in Sam Raimi's first stab at the webcrawler franchise, but the fact that he was covered up by what appeared to be a high-end Halloween costume for much of the film's running time didn't exactly inspire shudders. This may be an unpopular choice given the enormous popularity of the 2002 superhero flick, but I stand by my assertion that Spidey's original big-screen foe was a weak-sauce cinematic baddie more likely to tickle your funny bone than tingle your spine.
