10. "Le Fabuleux Destin d' Amelie Poulain" aka "Amelie"
Three of the films in my top ten deal with matters of the heart, but only "Amelie" gives itself over to pure swooning romantic hope. Audrey Tautou had appeared in films before this, and she's appeared in films since, but she will always be Amelie to me. This is a perfect case of a role fitting an actor perfectly, and I understand why Jean-Pierre Jeunet wept during her audition, suddenly aware that he had found the perfect person to bring his film to life. She is the personification of every person... not just every woman, but every person... who dares to dream that there is love out there for them, that there is a happy ending with their name on it. Look at her, sitting there in the dark, looking up at that screen, lost in the promise of the film she's watching. She's every single one of us who has ever fallen in love in a theater, who has ever believed in a fairy tale, and the magic of this movie is how she lives out her very own happily ever after.
