HitFix Interview: Lauren Alaina of 'American Idol'
HitFix: Lots of people had a lot of waiting to do before being put through into the Top 13. You didn't. How did it feel to get that out of the way early?
Lauren Alaina: It was a sign of relief, but we still had to watch everybody else face what we had to.
HitFix: Who did you feel the most suspense for?
LA: Everyone who went, because everyone in the room was so talented. If somebody would tell me they'd give me a million dollars to guess five of them, I would have been like, "I can't! There are so many great, talented people here."
HitFix: In the auditions and Hollywood footage, we mostly saw you do big ballads, but for your Top 24 performance, you went up-tempo. Which do you see as being closer to where you're most comfortable as an artist?
LA: I'm very... what's the word? Spastic? I don't know if that's a good word, but actually it kinda is, because I'm in a million places at once. I think there's a term for that, called ADHD. I love to sing the up-tempo, but it's just that the ballads show off your voice more, so I was trying to really impress with my vocals. I'm really an up-tempo kind of person, so I'm going to try to stick to my guns.
HitFix: "Idol" is a show where younger contestants have often struggled seeming too old or seeming too young. How are you going to be 16, but still give the judges what they want?
LA: I'm not gonna sing songs that say things that a 16-year-old shouldn't be singing about to girls her age. You know? Teenagers reach out to their age. Grown people connect to grown people. Well, some teenagers too, but you have to play to your audience. You can't sing something inappropriate for a 16-year-old girl, or younger, to hear. You just have to be careful what you sing.
HitFix: Does that mean no love songs?
LA: Don't make me say that! You know what I'm talking about! It's just generally about what 16-year-old girls should sing about: Crushes on boyfriends or breaking up with a boyfriend, just not... I don't know. I'm gonna sing about stuff that I would talk about.
HitFix: And how many other people have started calling Seacrest "Peaches"?
LA: Oh, there were signs and everything tonight. He's gonna kill me...
