'The Breakfast Club' (1985)
Why it’s horrifying: Stuck in detention for mainly non-existent crimes, a brain, an athlete, a basketcase, a princess and a criminal have to deal with each other’s neuroses and fears for a full, mind-numbing day as each one attempts to reveal that they aren’t the sum total of the stereotype that has been thrust upon them. The clock moves at a glacial pace as each is forced to face some pretty ugly truths about themselves and each other.
Most traumatic moment: When Judd Nelson’s character, punk John Bender, plays out his father’s escalating abuse to both himself and his mother, it’s a chilling scene that opens everyone’s eyes to why he has turned out the way he has and how heavily the sins of the father weigh on the son. - Melinda Newman
