Andrew Garcia of 'American Idol'
Think: David Cook gone acoustic
Our Unscientific Hunch Before the Top 24: Reinterpreting familiar hits proved to be a winning formula for David Cook two years ago and it got Blake Lewis into the Finals three years ago. How far can Andrew Garcia go making off-genre songs into easy-going guitar ballads? We have no idea, but it's worked thus far. His "Straight Up" was the defining performance of Hollywood Week and he's got a dad who's prone to tears. Put that guy in the front row bawling every episode out of pride for his son -- and he'll be there -- and you have a singer America will be able to support. The only concern is that after hearing Andrew do his thing three times now, I've kinda figured out his gimmick. I'm not tired of it yet, but after four or five weeks? I mighty be. Does he have more than one move? We'll see. But Andrew has a solid shot at going a long way this season, even if I don't agree with the early oddsmakers calling him the favorite.
