"Prime Suspect" debuted a decade after "Cagney & Lacey," but workplace sexism hadn't been magically cured in that time. So at the start, Tennison had to work twice as hard, be twice as tough, twice as smart, to get even half the respect her male colleagues did. And while her personality made her difficult to take, you'd run out of fingers and toes trying to count all the male TV cops who were just as abrasive — and just as brilliant — as Tennison.
