Kendrick Lamar, "good kid, m.A.A.d.city"
Previous number of nominations for Album of the Year: 0
Kendrick Lamar's second album and major label debut, "good kid, m.A.A.d.city," established him as one of hip-hop's brightest new stars. Critics and fans flocked to Lamar's raw lyricism about coming-of-age on the streets of Compton and top producers Dr. Dre, Just Blaze and Pharrell Williams ensured the beats were slick enough for radio play.
Why a nomination is likely/unlikely: Though the 2012 album went platinum and yielded five singles -- including the amazing "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" -- it has since been overshadowed by Lamar's new tracks with Big Sean and Eminem. GQ recently named Lamar its "Rapper of the Year" and placed him on the November cover, but his management complained about the tone of the story and pulled him from performing at the magazine's party. If there is something the Grammy Awards want to avoid, it's controversy, which might make them pass on Lamar.
