David Bowie, “The Next Day”
Previous number of nominations for Album of the Year: 1
Released with little fanfare, “The Next Day,” Bowie’s first album of new material in a decade, was greeted with critical hosannas and relief that the Thin White Duke was not only was still recording, but still had plenty to say. The man of many personas stripped them all away for the searing, beautiful mature treatise that showed us where he is right now, unvarnished and uncovered and very comfortable in his own skin.
Why a nomination is likely/unlikely: It is one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year and Bowie has strategically released videos from the project that have kept it in the forefront. The older Grammy voters also like to honor someone in their demo and he’s the frontrunner this year.
