The Civil Wars, "The Civil Wars"
Previous number of nominations for Album of the Year: 0
The Civil Wars have won 3 out of the 4 Grammy nominations they've been up for -- granted, one was amplified by the presence of Taylor Swift (on "Safe and Sound") but still, they're favorites among the Academy in the short time they've been on the map with "Barton Hallow" and that "Hunger Games" soundtrack song.
Why a nomination is likely/unlikely: There's a very good chance that The Civil Wars -- as we know it as the duo of Joy Williams and John Paul Williams -- is kaput. The two weren't on speaking terms when it came time to promote the self-titled set. Yet, so easy to listen to! An album with a melancholic backstory IRL! "The Civil Wars" is stuffed with the same stuff that made them a strong folksy, songwritery candidates before for genre categories, and voters may surprise us with sliding them into this category before the pair disappears due to irreconcilable creative differences.
