Highlights: “Welcome to the 77th and last Academy Awards!” The opening line of Rock's kamikaze hosting stint was also his funniest. He was a commendably dangerous choice and, if only sporadically, was on dangerous form: an extended riff likening the George W. Bush to a Gap employee wasn't exactly Oscar-night material, but it was funny and fit the political climate.
Lowlights: Oscar likes it hosts funny but still convivial, and Rock defiantly played the Hollywood outsider throughout – turning the room palpably chilly with his mockery of industry conventions and prejudices, and earning an unamused telling-off from presenter Sean Penn after belittling the career of two-time nominee Jude Law.
