Film He went 'bad' for: "Once Upon a Time in the West"
Why it was shocking: No list of actors subverting and upending their good-guy images could possibly be complete without Henry Fonda's turn as Frank in Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West." It wasn't that Fonda always played perfect people, but from Tom Joad to Abe Lincoln to Juror #8 to The President, you could usually count on a Henry Fonda character to have a moral core and Do the Right Thing and even in those moments of imperfection, you could at least count on him not to slaughter entire innocent families. There's absolutely no flinching from Fonda in "West," he's vicious, brilliant and straight-up evil. This is a guy who could go up against Anton Chigurh and Lorne Malvo and they'd probably leave crying.
