Worst: Michelle Williams and Laura Dern winning Best Actress in the Musical or Comedy categories
Williams was certainly a deserving nominee for her performance in "My Week with Marilyn", but it should've been in the Drama category. There's simply no way the film can be rationally justified as either a Comedy or a Musical, and as such it seems pretty likely there was a bit of behind-the-scenes trickery/bribery on the Weinsteins' part to garner it a slot in the category anyway. And while Dern's win for "Enlightened" isn't quite as egregious - the show does have some significant comedy elements - it's ultimately a dramatic series. With the show struggling in the ratings in its first season, the win for Dern is huge for the network; clearly they didn't think she stood as good a chance in the Drama category, and their maneuvering paid off. Seems a safe bet that its half-hour running time may have been the deciding factor in HBO successfully lobbying for its merits as a comedy.
