Q: Were you surprised about this nomination this morning?

A: Totally surprised. I was working on that song out of a van, y'know. I was just hanging out. So it is quite a honor.

Q: How did you get involved, and what appealed to you so much about this movie that you wanted to write for it?

A: I met [director Scott] Cooper for lunch. I had a lot in common with him, and the kind of music we liked. After I read the script, I wanted in... I was interested in [Jeff Bridges' character Bad Blake] hitting rock bottom.

Q: Do you think this opportunity has opened up more doors for you?

A: I’m just now getting warmed up. I've learned so much. I'm excited to get out and write a lot more songs. You just keep learnin'. I've been talking to T Bone [Burnett] going into the studio and doing more songs. It’s great. It's wonderful
