A visual history of this veteran punk band
The group released its first EP, "1,000 Hours," in 1989, its first full-length "39/Smooth" in 1990 then released two EPs, "Slappy" and "Sweet Children," later that year.
Lookout! compiled a sort-of Best Of with the appropriately titled "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" in 1991. "Kerplunk," Green Day's second proper full-length, came in 1992.
By this time, the group had toured nationally and were making a mark on music landscapes beyond the Bay area punk scene. "Kerplunk" managed to move more than 50,000 copies initially -- and unheard-of number for punk records at the time -- which naturally caught the attention of the major labels.
