5. Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood
Notable Collaborations: "A Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More," "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"
What makes them special: What Kurosawa did with Mifune, Leone did with Eastwood. He recognized something in him that went beyond screen charisma, and he was able to turn Eastwood into a brand-new Western icon, redefining the cowboy for an entire new generation of film fans. There had been plenty of Westerns before that, but the Leone films had a cool to them that was utterly unlike anyone else's movies. He took the American West from history to myth, and in Eastwood, he found the perfect giant to stand atop the new West he created.
