'Paranormal Activity' (2009)
Director Oren Peli debuted his innovative supernatural horror film to terrified audiences at both the 2007 Screamfest Film Festival and Slamdance 2008, prompting Paramount to snap up distribution rights. The studio heavily re-edited the film and slapped on a new ending, releasing it in September 2009 to word-of-mouth buzz and, ultimately, nearly $180 million worldwide. Notable as the first English-language "found footage" film to spawn a legitimate franchise, with a total of six installments and counting.
