From 'Adaptation' to Zombieland': 10 great self-aware movies before 'This Is the End'
Any zombie movie that actually goes so far as to have helpful rules about how to survive an attack by those pesky walking dead printed on the screen to drive the narrative isn't likely to be lazy in applying pop-culture tropes to the storyline. Luckily, "Zombieland" doesn't miss a trick. From a cameo by Bill Murray as an addled version of himself to Jesse Eisenberg's snarky, neurotic commentary, we never forget the many traditions that have been hammered into us by other, older horror films. And yet "Zombieland" still surprises with a smart cast of savvy zombie survivors (Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin) and imagery that tweaks the "rules" without breaking them, such as soccer moms run from their zombie carpool kids. While it's against the "rules" to get attached in zombie land, it's no crime to love a movie about it unconditionally.
