Best Supporting Actress: Nicole Kidman, "Stoker"
If the ever-adventurous Kidman does earn her fourth nomination this year, it’ll be for her upcoming turn as Grace Kelly in the Weinsteins’ “Grace of Monaco” – but she deserves to be remembered for her delicious malevolence in Park Chan-wook’s thrillingly whacked-out English-language debut. (The film deserves notice in numerous areas, including Mia Wasikowski’s remarkable lead, but we only have so much room.) Playing a particularly frosty variation on the merry widow archetype, Kidman takes her time revealing the character’s full hand of resentment and sexual jealousy in relation to her own daughter, building from witty passive-aggressive sniping to a climactic tirade worthy of “Mommie Dearest” in its seething bitterness.
