Best Adapted Screenplay: "In the House"
François Ozon’s ingenious comedy of manners is one of many films the French, annually privileged with a surfeit of options, could select as their Best Foreign Language Film submission – and if that’s unlikely to happen, any talk of a nomination for Ozon’s densely literate screenplay is strictly pipe-dream stuff. It shouldn’t be, though: flipping effortlessly between interleaved levels of fiction, Ozon has adapted Juan Mayorga’s play into a quasi-Hitchcockian cinematic treatise on the possibilities – and potential dangers – of storytelling. Elegantly elastic and nastily funny, it’s the most writerly release of the year so far.
