What new classics have we declared off-limits?
Why someone would want to remake it: It's the number-one grossing film of all time. Duh.
Why they shouldn't: Because without James Cameron's special brand of billionaire OCD, there is no "Avatar." Someone recently told me that they enjoy my writing about film, but that they don't understand how I could like "Avatar" in any way. They were angry about the script for the film, and they saw that as an unforgivable failure on the part of the movie. I think the film works first and foremost as a Travel Channel special about another planet and the various ways we might interact with it. James Cameron believes in Pandora. I think he's building Pandora in New Zealand. I suspect the "Avatar" sequels will only further prove that there's no one who even begins to build worlds on the scale that Cameron does.
